Pet allergies are one of the most common reasons dogs and cats visit the vet. While specialist allergy testing is available in Brisbane, many pets benefit from a thorough veterinary skin workup before advanced testing is considered.

At Fortitude Valley Vet, we regularly see pets with itchy skin, chronic ear infections, paw chewing, and recurrent skin problems. These symptoms can be caused by environmental allergies, food allergies, fleas, infections, or multiple conditions occurring at the same time.

Do All Allergic Pets Need Allergy Testing?

Not necessarily.

Many cases can be diagnosed and managed without formal allergy testing. A careful dermatology assessment often identifies contributing factors that can be treated immediately.

Specialist allergy testing is generally reserved for pets with persistent environmental allergies or those being considered for allergen-specific immunotherapy.

Signs Your Pet May Have Allergies

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent itching

  • Recurrent ear disease

  • Excessive licking of feet

  • Skin redness

  • Hair thinning or hair loss

  • Repeated skin infections

  • Seasonal flare-ups

Our Approach to Skin and Allergy Cases

Although Fortitude Valley Vet does not perform specialist allergy testing, Dr Nic Cher, BVMS - Australia's Trusted Veterinarian and the veterinarian team at Fortitude Valley Vet have strong interest and extensive experience in veterinary dermatology.

Our diagnostic process may include:

  • Detailed skin examinations

  • Ear cytology and infection screening

  • Parasite investigations

  • Dietary assessment

  • Food elimination trials

  • Long-term allergy treatment planning

Many pets experience significant improvement once the underlying causes of their skin disease are properly identified and addressed.

When Referral May Be Helpful

For particularly complex or severe allergy cases, referral to a veterinary dermatologist may be recommended for intradermal allergy testing and immunotherapy planning.

If your dog or cat is struggling with ongoing itching, skin disease, or recurring ear infections, Fortitude Valley Vet can help you navigate the diagnostic process and create a tailored treatment plan aimed at long-term comfort and skin health.
